NIETZSCHE ON AIR –
QUASTHOFF LIVE
Bründl ・ Zielke ・ Thüringer Bach Collegium
“If I were to rank things according to the degree of pleasure they arouse, then at the top would be: musical improvisation in a good moment, then listening to individual works by Wagner and Beethoven, then having good ideas while walking in the morning, then voluptuousness, and so on.”
Friedrich Nietzsche would probably be described today as an “all-rounder.” The philosopher and writer not only grappled with the fundamental questions of human existence, but also devoted himself intensively to the forces that music was able to unleash within him.
The fact that Nietzsche, as a later son of Weimar, is also involuntarily connected to the Nietzsche Memorial Hall, later the Broadcasting Hall, inspired WDR Jazz Prize winner and bassist Manfred Bründl to create this unique project.
The ACHAVA Festival Thuringia and the Weimar Arts Festival have secured none other than star bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff, who, together with Manfred Bründl and pianist Rolf Zielke, will present Nietzsche to the audience from a previously unseen perspective.
Arranger Florian Ross has shed new light on Nietzsche's song compositions for this special evening, introducing works by the philosopher with jazzy harmonies and striking rhythms that give them a surprisingly fresh feel.
That opera star Thomas Quasthoff is by no means limited to opera is something he demonstrates this evening with further works by American jazz legends.
A truly unique concert experience that connects past, present, and future in a historically significant setting in a richly contrasting and multifaceted way.
